County 9-1-1 Communications
Providing the vital connection between the community and emergency responders, County Communications answers the call and dispatches for 21 local agencies.

Diversion and Reentry Services
The Office of Diversion and Reentry Services works to assist formerly incarcerated individuals to transition successfully back into our community. Our Reentry Resource Center was developed to centralize services that can be offered to support reentry, ultimately helping to build a safer community.
Office of the District Attorney
The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office is the largest prosecutor’s office in Northern California. The Office handles more than 40,000 criminal cases each year including drunk driving, identity theft, fraud, elder abuse, burglary, robbery, sexual assault, domestic violence, gang violence and murder. The District Attorney's Office has also worked diligently to advocate not only for crime victims, but for the betterment of all community members through policies that address inequities in law by finding the best ways to hold those convicted of crimes responsible while also providing opportunities for productive lives.
The District Attorney's Crime Laboratory is the pre-eminent forensic laboratory in Northern California and analyzes thousands of evidentiary items each year using the most sophisticated and cutting-edge technology.
Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner
This office serves the community by conducting objective medicolegal death investigations in a compassionate manner into all deaths which fall under the jurisdiction of the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner's Office.
Office of Pretrial Services
This very unique County department assists the Court in making custody release decisions by using evidence-based practices. We provide timely, accurate investigative reports and client supervision services that support early intervention, personal improvement, and the preservation of public safety. Pretrial Services has demonstrated over 50 years that common sense alternatives to jail (instead of money bail) where appropriate, improves outcomes for the accused and the community at large.
Probation Department
The Santa Clara County Probation Department promotes community safety by overseeing offenders allowed to serve their sentence in the community. We use proven strategies that enhance and support positive change in clients, families, and neighborhoods. We also mitigate harm caused by criminal behavior.
Public Defender Office/Alternate Defender Office
The Public Defender and Alternate Defender offices provide vigorous and competent legal counsel in criminal and civil courts for those unable to pay for representation, including juveniles. Both offices undertake productive representation, investigate cases efficiently, provide effective defense to all clients so that constitutional rights are guaranteed, and collaborate with other law and justice agencies to develop and implement legally appropriate and cost-effective alternative punishment and rehabilitation options.
Office of the Sheriff
The Office of the Sheriff is responsible for safety in the unincorporated areas throughout Santa Clara County and manages the County jail system. The Sheriff’s office also provides security services for Superior Court, the Valley Transportation Agency, Valley Medical Center, is the law enforcement and security agency for Stanford University and supports an array of specialties that assist our local and regional partners, such as our Air Support Unit, Underwater Search Unit, Bomb Squad, Search & Rescue Team, Fugitive Apprehension & Surveillance Team and more.
Office of the Sheriff - Custody Division
The Sheriff's Custody Division is responsible for operating the fifth-largest jail system in the state of California. The Division intakes and houses individuals that are involved in the criminal justice process. We ensure those in custody are present for court dates, have medical and behavioral needs addressed and are afforded opportunities for alternatives to incarceration and skills development through the Sheriff's Work Program and partnerships with both our government partner agencies and non-governmental organizations.
The County's Public Defender's Office ensures a voice for those accused of crimes who cannot afford private representation.
